You might not need to remove all your wisdom teeth
Book an appointment with a reliable dental surgeon to assess whether you really need wisdom tooth removal.
Did you know that not everyone requires wisdom tooth removal?
What is wisdom tooth removal?
Wisdom tooth extraction is a dental procedure that is done to either extract or surgically remove your third molar.
It is usually removed to prevent further dental complications such as dental overcrowding, dental infections or to improve oral hygiene.
When should I remove my wisdom teeth?
Persistent Tooth Discomfort
If you have been feeling persistent or a nagging discomfort in your face, jaw or teeth because of your wisdom tooth, it might be a sign that you require wisdom teeth removal.
Dental Decay
If you have persistent recurrence of dental decay between your wisdom tooth and neighbouring teeth, it might be a sign that you should remove your wisdom tooth.
Sensitive Teeth
If you have been experiencing sensitive teeth at your wisdom tooth area that is akin to a dull ache or sharp pain when eating or drinking hot or cold foods, you might require wisdom tooth extraction.
Swollen or Tender Gums
An unremoved wisdom tooth can cause gum inflammation. You might experience it as swollen or tender gums around the wisdom tooth site. In severe cases, this might result in extra sensitive gums that bleed.
Impacted Wisdom Tooth
If your wisdom tooth is impacted and causing you discomfort or pain, you should head to the nearest dental clinic as soon as possible. An impacted tooth causes more than just pain. It is also prone to infections and abscesses. These conditions can cause damage, decay and disease to healthy teeth.
Bad Breath or Unpleasant Taste
If you have developed persistent bad breath or taste an unpleasant taste oozing out of your wisdom tooth site, it might be a wisdom tooth inflammation that requires immediate attention.
Wisdom tooth removal procedure
Consultation and assessment
Your first step begins with a consultation and assessment with one of our dentists at Elite Dental Group.
Your preferred wisdom tooth removal dentist will take an X-ray or a CBCT scan (if needed) to assess the exact position of your wisdom tooth.
This process also helps to ascertain whether the wisdom tooth is close to other structures like the nerves.
Numbing the extraction site
If you require wisdom tooth removal, the extraction site will be completely numbed with local anaesthetic before the procedure.
This ensures that you do not feel any discomfort during the wisdom tooth removal procedure.
Wisdom tooth removal
In some cases, you might require a minor surgical procedure to be done to remove your wisdom tooth. This is largely dependent on the position of your wisdom tooth and surrounding bone.
If a surgery is required, a small area of your overlying gum will be lifted. This allows us to get access to your wisdom tooth. Your tooth might also be sectioned to facilitate easy removal.
During the procedure, you might feel some pressure, vibrations or hear cracking noises, but there should be no pain.
Suturing the gum
Once your wisdom tooth has been removed, the dentist will sterilise the extraction site.
Your gums will be stitched back together to allow for healing.

Do I really have to remove my wisdom tooth?
You do not necessarily have to remove your wisdom teeth. In fact, some patients choose to retain their wisdom teeth.
While it is generally recommended to remove your wisdom teeth once they have fully emerged or erupted to prevent potential problems like dental infections or inflammations, you do not have to remove them.
Wisdom teeth are most likely removed if they are causing you trouble now, or look as if they are going to in the future.
What is the difference between wisdom tooth extractions and wisdom tooth surgeries?
A wisdom tooth extraction (simple) is usually done when the wisdom tooth is fully emerged, while a wisdom tooth surgery is done when the wisdom tooth is partially or fully submerged under the gum.
Both of these procedures are done under local anaesthetic. You can also request your dentist for stronger sedation if you are anxious about removing your wisdom tooth/teeth.
How much do wisdom tooth removals cost in Singapore?
The cost of a wisdom tooth removal procedure costs $500 – $1,500 at Elite Dental Group.
To break it down further, the cost of a simple wisdom tooth removal at Elite Dental Group is $500 – $800 per tooth, while the cost of a surgical extraction is $1,250 – $1,500 per tooth.
The final cost will be dependent on the following factors:
- Whether it is a simple or surgical extraction,
- The placement of the tooth,
- Complexity of the procedure e.g. whether it is close to a nerve,
- Whether you are covered by dental insurance or Medisave or CHAS.

Are wisdom tooth removals painful?
Wisdom tooth removals are not meant to be painful. During the procedure, local anaesthetic will be administered to you.
While you will still be able to hear and feel vibrations or pressure, your extraction site will feel numb. You will not be able to feel any pain.
